Why Independent Pharmacies Matter:
After waiting for 17 minutes on hold with a CVS pharmacy, I finally heard a technician’s voice: “How can I help you?” I introduced myself, “This is Dr. Barke with a new prescription, please.” The response? “I’m sorry, but my pharmacist is giving out a COVID vaccine. You’ll need to call back later.”
Never mind that I had already been waiting patiently for 17 minutes; my time, it seemed, was less valuable than administering another vaccine. And let's be clear—the COVID vaccine neither stops infection nor transmission. What it does accomplish, however, is transferring money from patients’ pockets into the coffers of Big Pharma.
As a holistic physician, I avoid using branded pharmacies like CVS whenever possible. These corporate entities have consistently refused to dispense medications such as Ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19. Instead, I prefer to work with compounding pharmacies or small, independent pharmacies. While on hold, I was reminded—through a cheerful automated message—to “be safe” and get my updated COVID booster along with my flu shot, conveniently free with most health insurance.
This isn’t the first time I’ve encountered a pharmacy being unavailable due to vaccine administration. Follow the financial incentives, and the pattern becomes obvious. My personal favorite excuse, though, is when pharmacies close for an hour midday due to a lunch break. Customer-facing businesses closing entirely for lunch? It’s almost laughable.
In contrast, my favorite compounding pharmacy, Westcliff Compounding Pharmacy in Newport Beach, CA, provides exemplary service. The owner, Mike, understands that customer service is about valuing both the patient and the prescriber. I can call, text, or email him and receive a prompt response. You’ll never find Mike administering a vaccine or shutting his doors for a lunch break. He even arranges medication delivery when necessary. This level of personalized care reminds me of the Nordstrom of old—a service-first mentality.
At Westcliff, Ivermectin can be compounded when needed. Interestingly, in Tennessee, Ivermectin is available without a prescription. Unfortunately, here in California, we’re still navigating unnecessary restrictions and bureaucratic hurdles.
Corporate pharmacies have massive financial incentives to market and push vaccines. Pharmaceutical companies, immune from liability, reap significant profits. Yet, the principle of informed consent is often neglected. Patients deserve detailed information about the risks and benefits of any product they receive, whether it’s picked up at the pharmacy or injected into their arm. Instead, most sign a computer screen, waiving their right to proper informed consent. This isn’t just unethical; it’s a failure of our healthcare system.
So, what’s the solution? Seek out compounding pharmacies or non-branded, independent pharmacies near you. When your doctor writes you a prescription, request that it be sent to one of these establishments. And please, don’t ask me to send your prescription to CVS.
By prioritizing independent pharmacies, we support a healthcare model that values patient care over profit. Together, we can take small but meaningful steps toward reclaiming a system that respects both the patient and the provider.
A holistic approach to healthcare means choosing providers and services that align with your values. Independent pharmacies not only prioritize patient care but also often work closely with prescribers to ensure optimal outcomes. This partnership is essential in a system increasingly dominated by corporate interests and profit-driven agendas.
As patients and providers, we can push back against the commodification of healthcare by making intentional choices. Advocate for your health by finding a trusted independent pharmacy. Encourage open communication with your healthcare provider about alternative options. And remember, informed consent is your right—demand it.
If you’re in Southern California, I highly recommend Westcliff Compounding Pharmacy. Their commitment to patient care and personalized service sets them apart in an industry that too often prioritizes profit over people.

I do the same--urge patients to dump the chains and pledge allegiance to the independent pharmacy. At this point, the only way the chains survive is by leveraging insurance contracts to offer "discounts" on prescription fills. Everything else they do is evil.
I'm stuck with Express Scripts, Navy base, or Walgreens. I liked my old Pharmacy better, they knew me by sight. Always helpful if I had questions. The Boatwright Pharmacy of Millington, TN has been the backbone of the community. Can't say that about these chains. You are a number. They all go to lunch at one time. Not so Boatwright's they stagger it. The Father Leroy even has the street named after him. His son Steven follows in his dad's carrying foot steps.
